European EFI Seminar: Petteri Vihervaara on EBVs

The European Ecological Forecasting Initiative (EEFI) is the regional chapter of the broader Ecological Forecasting Initiative. EEFI brings together individuals from academia, government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and industry who share a common goal: to develop and apply ecological forecasts that advance ecological theory, improve tools, and inform decision-making in the face of environmental change.

As part of its community-building and knowledge-sharing efforts, EEFI hosts monthly seminars. The May 2024 seminar featured a presentation by Dr. Petteri Vihervaara from the Finnish Environment Institute, titled "The Essential Biodiversity Variables for Improved Biodiversity Monitoring and Modelling." Dr. Vihervaara, a member of the OBSGESSION coordination team, provided an overview of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and emphasised the growing potential of remote sensing technologies and their integration into a detection-attribution modeling framework. His talk also included updates on the latest biodiversity monitoring initiatives in Europe and Finland, as well as insights into global efforts coordinated under GEO BON.
