Biodiversity pilots: Internal OBSGESSION seminar

In May, the fourth internal seminar of OBSGESSION took place and focused on the case studies developed to demonstrate the implementation of techniques in Work Packages 2, 3 and 4 and to respond to the European (EU) Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the joint Flagship Action on Biodiversity and Vulnerable Ecosystems initiated by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission (EC).

The case studies, also referred to as biodiversity pilots, represent nature sites in Europe where the methods and technologies, such as high-resolution mapping, remote sensing EBVs, eDNA, image spectroscopy and others, will be tested and used. The six pilots are as follows:

  • Multiscale, multimodal, and multi-temporal understanding and predicting of biodiversity response to global change in the European Alps

  • Mapping & Monitoring of European habitats

  • Monitoring and forecasting forest ecosystem productivity and health under climate change and disturbances

  • Ecosystem condition of temperate and boreal forest protection and restoration from soil eDNA combined with image spectroscopy

  • Monitoring freshwater ecosystem functioning under climate change and disturbances at European scale

  • Ecosystem functioning and freshwater & transitional waters quality

Three other seminars have been held on the topics of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs), Detection and Attribution Modelling Framework (DAM) and Basics of Uncertainty of Measurement. The recordings the seminars including the most recent one on Biodiversity pilots can be found on the OBSGESSION YouTube and the News & media section of the project’s website.
