Innovation meets Nature: Biodiversa+ launches first biodiversity monitoring science fair in Barcelona

Biodiversa+ successfully held its first “Biodiversity Monitoring Science Fair” in Barcelona on 21 and 22 May, bringing together leading voices from research, policy, and the private sector to explore cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of biodiversity monitoring.

The event featured a blend of keynote talks, topical sessions, and project showcases, with strong participation both on-site and online. The programme included:

  • 21 May – Keynote addresses on European and global biodiversity challenges, topical sessions on eDNA, bioacoustics, and remote sensing, and presentations from cutting-edge research projects.

  • 22 May – A World Café session, fostering collaborative exchanges on the challenges, solutions, and future of biodiversity monitoring technologies.

Among the participants was Prof. Dr. Maria J. Santos (University of Zurich), a member of the OBSGESSION consortium, who presented an oral talk, “What can we learn about biodiversity with remote sensing approaches? Demonstration case on spectroscopy for biodiversity,” showcasing the project’s innovative approach to biodiversity monitoring.

By connecting people, technology, and data, the fair created a platform for cross-sector dialogue and innovation, highlighting the critical role of emerging tools in safeguarding biodiversity.
