OBSGESSION has released a series of factsheets introducing the project’s six biodiversity pilots and the environmental challenges they address across Europe. Together, the pilots explore how innovative combinations of Earth Observation, field data, environmental DNA, ecological modelling and artificial intelligence can improve biodiversity monitoring across a wide range of ecosystems. The work carried out by the project’s consortium members and showcased via the six pilots spans biodiversity change in the European Alps, habitat mapping and monitoring, forest productivity and ecosystem condition, below-ground biodiversity in temperate and boreal forests, freshwater ecosystem dynamics, and the links between biodiversity and water quality across freshwater catchments.

By testing OBSGESSION approaches in different environmental and geographical settings, the pilots provide important in-situ data for understanding how biodiversity information can be collected, combined, and translated into more useful knowledge for research, conservation, ecosystem management, and policy.

Although each pilot addresses a different ecosystem or monitoring challenge, they all contribute to the same broader objective of improving the way biodiversity and ecosystem change are observed and understood, while supporting the development of more integrated and scalable approaches to environmental monitoring.
